My Preciousssss.....

Wanton gadget lust in full effect. New shiny incoming...

I've long said that my most treasured gadget ever is my Sony Reader PRS-500 eBook . I've had one since they were first released two years ago and it has never left my side. It's always in my purse and I'd read it while walking down the hall at work (until I realized that I look super-geeky doing that so I stopped). At home it's on the side table right next to me whether I'm in the living room or in bed. When I brush my teeth in the morning it's propped up on the counter. The brown suede leather cover is well-loved, a little threadbare in spots which only adds to its charm.

Last October, the Sony Reader PRS-505 was released and I resisted the urge since the PRS-500 does everything I want it to do. This past September Sony began offering a "trade-in program" where they will give me $100 toward the purchase of a PRS-505 for trading in my PRS-500. But I heard rumors of an October 2nd announcement so I held my breath and waited.

BEHOLD the Sony Reader PRS-700!

I think it's time to upgrade -- with a touch-screen to flip pages with a finger, notetaking capabilities, integrated front-lighting, this Sony Reader is full of win. Pre-orders now available on Sony's website with a projected release date of November 14th, 2008. Excited! :)

Shari probably needs to update this post - after actually seeing the 700 at the Sony Connect store in Scottsdale, and comparing it to the 505, she got the 505. The 505 is a nicely refined step up from the 500, and supports Adobe DRM - which means that Shari can check out ebooks from the library for free and read them on her reader. The 700 is new technology, isn't nearly as refined, and simply doesn't work as well. (Shari can fill in the blanks as to why I make this statement, since she's the one that actually uses the reader - I'm still a paper book guy.) Sony really dropped the ball on the 700. It looks nice on their site, and sounds great in print, but in person it's a big let down.
